Differ your characters! basics by kevintheradioguy Differ your characters! basics by kevintheradioguy
I wanted to do something good for ~CharacterDevelopment, so I've done this. These are the basics only, but it might help someone in their first steps of making serious characters. As I said before, characters are not only the hair and colours. These are their figure, facial features, eye forms, etcetera, and etcetera. Begin with these!

I'm sorry if I did some mistakes. If you see one, let me know, so I can fix it.

I take suggestions for such tutorials and guides, and I can gladly help you with anything I can. I keep no secrets :) Oh! And I haz a tumblr!

EDIT holy Cheese! It's been on dviantArt less then 14 hours, and I already have, like, almost 200 faves :o I didn't know people needed this so much! Oh, dears, If only I knew, I'd make more. you!

Everything about this tutorial is so perfect. I love to see artists who try and make their characters all look diverse and different. Even though I write more than draw all of this is super important. Diversifying characters is so key! It makes them that much more lovable and unique!

Ptss! I write more then I draw as well :)

I just wanted to help people who'd like to improve and differ their characters, but can't see how to do that (though, it's kinds obvious).

Super useful :D The fact you showed that, inside each big 'type' of feature there can be variations helps a lot to expand the number of choices available. Thanks for sharing!

I tried out some of the things you pointed out here, and it actually works! *throws confetti*
I have a few characters whose art I never showed because they look like the same person with different hairstyle/color :XD: being able to tell them apart only makes them a lot more interesting, and I think I'm regaining the will to develop them further :)

Congrats on the 200 faves; tutorials are very popular and will get a heap of views and favourites if they're good. Like this one for example xD.

I will study this tutorial with great gusto but my characters are basically children and I don't think that their faces have had much time to mature (correct me if I'm wrong) so there will only be slight differences in my case. However the eyes are interesting, especially the almond eyes as I have a character that I really want to use them on but I've never gotten the shape quite right.

Thanks for the tutorial! <3

Oh, thanks for the congrats :thanks: I'm really surprised it worked out that way.

Ah, well, children do have a little difference in their appearance. Maybe that's why the facial structures should be studied better (as you have the limits). I think of doing deeper tutos based on this one. Separate big for eyes+brows+lashes, for noses, lips, chins+cheeks, etc.
But I procrastinate.
